Accelerating Corporate Change Using Technology and Learning

Strategic Acceleration Requires Effective People Development

As a business leader, I have stayed awake many nights trying to figure out how to get my 100s of employees dancing to the same beat. It's exceptionally hard. More difficult than most people really understand. In my early days as a manager, I failed at it. I'm the first to admit this. Sheer momentum got the best of me. I was also quite a bit younger and with age comes scars and wisdom. This is a quick post that talks about the importance of effective employee development to help ensure everyone is dancing to a similar beat.

It is important to remember that if you're changing strategy, most employees don't understand why the change is happening or how they can contribute. They're just being told to get in line. This slows down the implementation of your strategy. To trick to getting everyone on board is developing their understanding and their skills.

Creating Training for the Digital Age That Is Hands-On, Applicable, and Aligned is one of the most effective tools I've utilized. The only problem is that this is often the hardest and most time-consuming step. This is what inspired me to start Acceleration Studios. The trick is to start this process early-on and ensure to keep HR and T&D teams close by and heavily involved.

What ever you do, don't just create a bunch of slides and call it a day. The training has to be hands-on and applicable to jobs and the strategy. Place special focus on business acumen and how it aligns with corporate strategy. You are trying to give managers a day in the life of a CEO. This will help managers learn the what, why, and how more naturally.

Once they understand the corporate strategy on their own terms, the change will come far more easily. Fortune 500® companies have been utilizing business-training simulations like this for years. In the past, these amazing tools have been out of reach of smaller companies. But, thanks to advancements in technology, the “little guy” now has access to development tools that have traditionally been reserved for the top companies only.

The takeaway: Ensure that with corporate strategic change comes effective employee development. You'll find it's one of the most effective ways to accelerate change within your organization. Not only that, it builds morale and teamwork as a bonus.
